Abstract

My research group focuses on the physical modeling of the dynamic behaviors of animal cells and tissues. In physics, animal cells and tissues are usually referred to as active soft matter. In this Pearl River Scholar Forum, I will introduce our latest work about extending the widely-used Onsager's variational principle in soft matter dynamics to the dynamic modeling of active soft matter. This work has not been submitted yet. I am very happy that I can present it firstly in our own university. To be specific, I will apply our theoretical method to a toy two-sphere microswimmer, myosin motors moving on actin filaments, droplets and thin films of active units.  I believe that the concepts and theoretical methods we are now developing will impact the physical modeling of life and provide deeper understanding on the emergent behaviors in individual cells and in tissues such as curvotaxis and morphogenesis. About the Speaker

Dr. Xu Xinpeng received his B.S. in physics from the Wuhan University in 2008 and Ph.D. in Nano Science and Technology from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2012. After several years of post-doctor experiences in HKUST, Weizmann Institute of Science, and Technion-Israel, he joined the faculty of science in GTIIT in the fall of 2017 as an assistant professor. His main research interests are in the theory of soft matter and biological systems in close collaboration with experiments. In particular, his recent research focuses on the structure, phase behavior and dynamics of systems such as droplets, polymer solutions, polymer gels, active fluids and biological cells, using the approaches of statistical thermodynamics. His works have been published in some top scientific journals: Nature Physics, Physical Review Letters, Biophysics Journal, Physical Review E, Physical Review Fluids, and Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter etc. In addition, after joining in GTIIT, his research has been supported by a number of research grants, such as: Guangdong Province Pearl River Young Scholars Project (珠江青年学者2019), Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau joint research project for the national research centers of applied mathematics (粤港澳应用数学中心研究项目), 2020 Canadian Banff Research Center International Conference Fund Project (加拿大Banff研究中心国际会议基金项目2020), 2019 Provincial Science Foundation of Guangdong for Young scholars (广东省区域联合青年基金项目2019), 2020 Li Ka Shing Foundation Cross-Disciplinary Research Grant (李嘉诚交叉学科研究项目), Featured Innovative Projects (广东省高校特色创新人才项目) and Youth Talent Innovative Platforms (广东省高校青年创新人才项目) in Universities in Guangdong Province, Shantou City 2018 Science and Technology Overseas Study Support Project (汕头市2018年度科技领域出国(境)学习研究支持项目), GTIIT--Technion Cooperation Fund Project (广以-以色列理工学院合作基金项目), and so on.
