Freshmen’s voice丨Wang Zhaokun: The Road to Top Student

PostTime:11/24/2021

Time flies on the prosperous Daxue Road, while Guangdong Israel-Institute of Technology stands quietly in a corner, welcoming another group of young and enthusiastic freshmen. Students from all over the world, with dreams and aspirations, are ready to start their life at GTIIT. From this week, a series of interviews with freshmen will be launched, to show their feelings and expectations about GTIIT.

Here is the story of Wang Zhaokun, who graduated from High School Affiliated to Fudan University.

The blind box with a secret design inside – GT surprises me

Wang, at first, like most of the students from Shanghai, was unfamiliar with GTIIT, a university lies more than 1,000 kilometers away from home. When searching on the internet, he learned that 70 percent of the first batch of GT graduates had received offers from world-renowned science and engineering colleges. This convinced him that GT was a good choice for students who wanted to pursue further studies in science and engineering. After two months in GT, Wang felt that it was the right place for him.

"GTIIT has a strong and well-respected faculty. Professors have solid academic backgrounds,  rich experiences and high h-index." Wang added that if he had applied for other  universities sponsored by Project 985, which are high-ranked in China (Project 985 is a boosting project to promote the Chinese higher education system), he might not have received more than now. "You have more opportunities to learn because of the rich resources and small class sizes. Each student here can have more interaction with the teacher."

Wang soon fell in love with GT’s quiet campus, a good place for students to concentrate on study and scientific research. Gradually catching up on the fast learning pace, he has a preliminary plan for the future: to develop in the field of algorithm for graduate study. Wang also believes that the mathematical thinking training and computer education provided by GT will equip him with the knowledge and ability for further study.

The king of “Neijuan” also met trouble—struggle in the English teaching mode

“Classmates called me the king of ‘Neijuan’ (a buzzword in Chinese to reflect the endeavor to survive in the fierce competition). In the first week of preparatory courses, Wang was one of the first students to study in the student hub. He felt that the English teaching and large amount of knowledge input urged students to spend more time in preparation and revision.

"The pace of teaching here is quite fast. You need to have a clear understanding of the first part of the class before you start next. The class is demanding." Wang described the mathematics classes in GT as of mass new concepts, definitions and proof methods; besides, the homework is much more difficult than the lecture. In addition to reviewing notes and finishing homework, Wang also sought to finish the exercises on the textbook, which he thought were of very high quality and consolidation.

On the other hand, small classes with problem-driven requirement, which is different from the traditional teaching style in high schools, also poses challenges for Wang. "The very first thing that we were told in GT was that Technion has a tradition of “problem-driven”, but at present most of us are working hard to keep up with the lecture." Wang expected not only to ask a question, but also to ask a good question like a mathematician. At the same time, he also appreciated the strictness and frankness of the professors. When he came up with a question, the professor would directly point out the problems in his mathematical thinking, which helped him a lot.

"GTIIT has brought me a lot of surprises, and I hope more students who are interested in science and technology come to join us." Wang added with a smile, "I enjoy the atmosphere here. Students here work really hard. I hope all of us will keep a high enthusiasm for learning."
