New Year Greetings from GTIIT

PostTime:1/21/2023

As we bid a due and wrap up the old and fruitful 2022, as we welcome and get ready to shift our momentum to the new year 2023, we would like to extend our warmest wishes to all the students, faculty members, teachers and staff of GTIIT as well as to all our partners and friends from the cultural coastal city of Shantou.

Reflecting back on 2022, the passing year of the tiger, which was marked by noteworthy highlights and changes, there are many reasons for us to be proud with our accomplishments. We succeeded to fulfill our motto: "Dream it, do it".

The passing year was the year in which we marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Israel. Guangdong Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) is the sparkling jewel of China-Israel cooperation in higher education for science and technology. It gathers and combines the tradition and wisdom of education and learning of these two ancient nations. GTIIT has fostered these bonds of amity and friendship, and its students and graduate students are the witness, build and beneficiary from the growth of these bilateral ties. We wish that China-Israel friendship relations continue to thrive in the coming new year of the rabbit like an evergreen tree.

In the spirit of "Dream It, Do It", we have worked for a steady development of disciplinary construction in 2022. The Chemistry program, which has cultivated three Nobel prize winners in the Technion, started to enrol students in GTIIT in the fall of 2022. Two of our programs: Biotechnology and Food Engineering, as well as Chemical Engineering were listed on the "provincial first-class undergraduate program construction sites", thus joining the Materials Science and Engineering program which has been on this list before. We initiated a collaboration with SUSTech to jointly train master students thereby expanding our efforts to recruit and nurture talents for our rapidly growing graduate school. While targeting key areas and basic disciplines, GTIIT sets it sight on the global frontiers of science and technology.

GTIIT continues to aim high. In 2022, we celebrated the graduation of our second cohort. The majority of our graduate students continue on to further study: 15% of them attend the globe's top 10 universities, 50% attend the top 50%, and 90% attend the top 100. Those who decide to enter the job market have been employed by leading enterprises in the fields of new energy, artificial intelligence, electronic chip manufacturing and 5G communication. Our graduates provide the best proof and assurance to the fact that GTIIT is indeed a fertile soil to dream, to experience, to grow and to thrive.

GTIIT continues to assemble talents, store wisdom and thrive for innovation. Associated with our staff are Nobel Laureate, Academician of CAS, Fellow of CAE and many more talented faculty members mentors and teachers.

We proudly mention Prof. Ji-Dong Gu from Environmental Science and Engineering who is the Elsevier 2021 Highly Cited Chinese Researcher. 20% GTIIT professors belong to the world's 2% scientists list released by Stanford University. We continue to recruit and assemble a pool of talented scientists and researchers to form and develop a first-rate research university.

Research continues to be GTIIT main goal. By the end of 2022, nearly 800 papers have been published by GTIIT staff. More than 110 research projects have been granted, including 13 by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and 19 by the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province. The project "Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Materials and Technologies for Energy Conversion (MATEC)" was involved in the Platform Base and Science and Technology Infrastructure Construction Project of the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province. This is GTIIT's first recognized provincial level research platform. In the coming year we will keep moving forward and actively thrive to shape and build GTIIT as one of the country's premier research universities.

We aim to conduct innovative university-industry collaborations. We wish to follow the Technion Technology Transfer (T3) model by building an innovation ecological chain to transfer basic research technological breakthroughs to industry by providing the needed seed financial support. In 2022 we witness an annual growth rate of 200%. Plenty of patents were registered and authorized in China, the United States, and in Japan. Our research teams in the "Electron Microscopy Center", "Electronic and Mechanical Design Center", as well as other scientific departments have accomplished dozens of university-industry cooperation projects using their expertise. The university is slowly but effectively turning into a "booster" for regional traditional industries and an "incubator" for new industries.

The campus rapid growth. With the partial opening of the south campus one can now enjoy excellent sports facilities, comfortable residence, beautiful academic exchange centre and soon-to-be-opened international and bilingual schools. We look forward to 2023 when the campus construction will be completed.

China's young generation of today are living in a remarkable time. These days, the young generation has an uncomparably broad stage on which to display their full talents and abilities. The young students of this generation have bright prospects for realizing their dreams, since strengthening China through science and education has been an essential national strategy. In this process, talents, education and research are the primary productive forces of scientific and technological innovation. GTIIT is such an example for a STEM and Research university, and it will continue to build up and to move ahead in full steam.

We open the year 2023 with great hopes. We will continue to be motivated by Israeli "Chutzpah" combined with profound Chinese cultural roots to build internationally recognized excellence in scientific and technological education and research.

We wish you all a happy, fruitful and successful Year of Rabbit, 2023!
