Position Description
This role is for a lab teaching assistant for the GTIIT chemistry lab courses (organic or analytical chemistry, depending on the candidate’s experience). This is a part-time hourly-paid role, for two eight-hour lab classes per week: Monday and Friday (analytical), or Tuesday & Thursday (organic). The position will also include paid training in carrying out the procedures and relevant safety information.
The lab classes are expected to start in the week commencing 2019/4/15 and will run for 7 weeks. The training will be provided in the weeks before this date, as soon as possible.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Before starting the semester: (a) Learning lab safety means and regulations, (b) Doing all experiments and submitting reports to the lab teacher.
· Before each lab, preparing a short quiz for the students and checking it (for permitting students to do the lab).
· Delivering general instructions and explanations to a group of students, on the lab session.
· Supervising the lab work of a group of ca 8 students.
· Assisting students with the lab procedures and instruments during the lab session.
· Taking care of safety issues in the lab, in general, and in a student group, in particular.
· Asking questions for evaluating the knowledge and readiness of the students.
· Writing a report on students’ performance (used for the final grade).
· Being present in the lab during all session time.
· Checking students preliminary and final lab reports, marking mistakes, writing comments and grading them.
Required Job Specifications
· Undergraduate degree (or higher) in chemistry or a chemistry-related subject
· Experience of working in an organic and/or analytical chemistry lab setting
Required Job Competencies
· Language ability: English communication must be excellent (speaking, reading and writing)
· Good communication and educational skills
· Ability to read scientific documents and lab procedures
