Shalev Gihaz

Dr. Gihaz obtained his PhD on enzyme engineering from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering at the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology. His research was focused on lipase engineering for increased stability in organic solvents towards the production of biodiesel from waste oil feedstock. During his studies he was specialized in molecular biology techniques, protein expression and purification, chromatography methods (HPLC, GC, GCMS), biochemical protein characterization, SEM analysis, enzyme immobilization and X-ray crystallography for protein structure determination. He was guiding and mentoring numerous B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. students during his studies. Dr. Gihaz was working for 3 years at “Pluristem” biomed company based in Haifa, Israel- where he was experienced with cell culture techniques (sourced from human placenta), bioreactors design and installation and GMP maintenance environment.

Dr. Gihaz received several awards in recognition of his achievements, including the Miriam and Aaron Gutwirth Memorial Interdisciplinary Fellowship and Leonard and Diane Sherman Interdisciplinary Fellowship scholarships for excellence in research, in addition with The Israeli Food Industry Association excellence award.

Alongside his research efforts, Dr. Gihaz was a teaching assistant (TA) in Thermodynamic in Food and Biotechnology Engineering course and head of TA’s at the Laboratory of Advanced Food Processing Technologies for 5 years.
