Seeking a 'Carbon' Future for Green Development! The Symposium on Carbon Neutrality and Green Chemical Engineering Technology Held at Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology

From November 25th to 27th, the Carbon Neutrality and Green Chemical Engineering Technology Forum was held at the Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

Co-hosted by the Chemical Engineering Department of Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Materials and Technologies for Energy Conversion (MATEC), the forum brought together nearly 70 representatives from domestic and international universities such as Tsinghua University, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Science and Technology of China, Xiamen University, Sichuan University, Zhengzhou University, Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Process Engineering Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dalian University of Technology, Southern University of Science and Technology, Guangdong University of Technology, and the Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. The participants gathered in Shantou, Guangdong, to explore the latest advancements in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), as well as cutting-edge green chemical engineering technologies and solutions. The forum aimed to exchange ideas and foster effective collaboration among domestic and international researchers, focusing on achieving the dual carbon goals of 'carbon emission peak by 2030' and 'carbon neutrality by 2060'.


Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology's Chancellor and Chinese Academy of Sciences academician, Gong Xingao, delivered a welcoming speech. In his address, he presented the history and current development of the institute, encouraging scholars and experts to respond to the national call and actively engage in scientific research towards achieving carbon neutrality.

Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology's Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Moris Eisen, and Dean of Chemical Engineering, Moshe Sheintuch, respectively presented the institute's academic discipline development and the department's specialized programs. Their presentations aimed to deepen the understanding of the attending representatives regarding the institute.


The attendees and participants engaged in enthusiastic discussions on various topics, including CO2 capture, conversion, and utilization, bioenergy, biological CO2 fixation, H2 technologies, advanced membrane technologies, and life cycle assessment of green production. They envisioned the application prospects of next-generation green chemical engineering technologies. This academic exchange not only fostered discussions but also motivated more students and educators to dedicate themselves to the development and utilization of carbon-neutral and green chemical engineering technologies. This commitment aims to contribute pragmatically towards fostering sustainable societal development.

Professor Ming Yonggang from Guangdong University of Technology, Academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering, delivered a presentation on "Capture and Reutilization of Various Carbon Dioxides".

Professor Zhang Xiangping from the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a presentation titled "CO2 captured and conversion enhanced by Ionic-liquid".

Professor Chen Guoqiang from Tsinghua University delivered a presentation titled " Next Generation Industrial Biotechnology based on Halophiles".

Professor Wang Ye from Xiamen University delivered a presentation titled "Catalytic Conversions of CO2 to High-value C2+ Compounds Driven by Renewable Energy".

Professor Fang Baishan from Xiamen University delivered a presentation titled "Artificial intelligence systems for enhancing the automation of biorefinery".


The conference was chaired by Professor Zhong Ziyi, Associate Professors He Xuezhong and Xu Peng from the Chemical Engineering Department of Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. Additionally, Associate Professors Gao Xi, Zheng Weiran from the Chemistry Department, and Associate Professor Yigal Achmon from the Department of Biotechnology and Food Engineering actively participated in the organization and preparation of the conference.
