GTIIT has been listed in the Guangdong High Level University Development Program

PostTime:11/13/2018

Good News! Approved by Guangdong Government, GTIIT has been listed in the "Guangdong High Level University Development Program" after several rounds of strict selection by academic committees. GTIIT is the youngest one among 18 universities which are listed in the Program. Four disciplines, including Materials Science and Engineering, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Environmental Engineering are listed as key disciplines.

What is "Guangdong High Level University Development Program"?

This Program was jointly launched by Provincial Education Department, Development and Reform Commission, Science and Technology Department, and Financial Department this year, aiming at improving the comprehensive strength and global impact of provincial higher education.  8 to 10 universities are expected to be developed as the national top 100 by 2020.

According to the Program, universities which have been selected into the program will be significantly supported for nurturing comprehensive strength, innovation capability and global impact. By 2020, more universities and disciplines in the province are expected to be on the national top lists. Guangdong will develop into a vibrant and innovative base to achieve education excellence, and promote academia-industry partnerships and knowledge transfer.

Introduction of 4 key disciplines

The MSE program will develop cutting edge research in the fields of electronic materials, materials physics, nano-magnetism and spintronic materials, materials for energy applications, structural materials and their characterization by quantum beams, and polymers and soft materials. From an engineering point of view, this discipline will design the microstructure of the material and optimize the process to provide excellent performance. In recent years, the scientific community has paid more attention to materials with microstructures on the long-range scale of nanometers. This program will develop advanced metals and alloys, polymers and plastics, modern ceramic materials, composite materials, batteries, fuel cells, photovoltaic materials, methods and materials for corrosion protection for the design of materials and manufacturing process in microelectronics industry in Guangdong Province and the Greater Bay Area.

The FE program offers a special interdisciplinary composition of Food Engineering and Technology, and Life Sciences, and also conducts research on a multi-disciplinary level. The research activity at FE is interdisciplinary and covers a range of state-of-the-art topics in the following fields: Food Engineering and Technology; Food Safety; Encapsulation and Drug Delivery; Packaging; Protein Engineering and Enzymology; Biochemistry and Nutrition; Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering; Advanced Genetics and Molecular Biology; Animal and Plant Science; and Computational Biology. In addition, we operate an impressive infrastructure, including a Pilot Plant with semi-industrial equipment, and core facilities of state-of-the-art equipment, and bioreactors, all serving as Food Engineering-technology, Biotechnology and Packaging R&D facilities.

The CE program has established specific research centers for R&D activities based on the major strategic demand for local development, including Green Catalyst Center on energy and environmental issues, Polymer and Plastics Research Center on need for environmental treatment caused by large-scale toy industry and Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing Center on the need for transformation and upgrade for local major strategic industry—Chemical Engineering. The above three research centers have unique advantages in terms of geographical location, infrastructure and academic team foundation, and their construction is expected to greatly promote the construction of the proposed advanced chemistry and fine chemical engineering laboratory in Guangdong Province, which will make a significant contribution to the social and economic development in east Guangdong and even the whole Guangdong Province.

The EE program is dedicated to cutting-edge research in the areas of water treatment, wastewater treatment, soil remediation, marine pollution remediation, river ecological restoration, carbon cycling, sediment research, clean technology, and quantification and reduction of air pollution. In view of the seriousness of water and soil pollution in the eastern Guangdong and the whole Guangdong Province, the research team of this department will strive to provide a variety of solutions for the local government. Two to three pilot plants will be built for pollutant treatment; a variety of optimized solutions will be provided; the research results will be used to clean up contaminated rivers and soils in the area, especially in Lianjiang (water), Guiyu (soil) and other key regions. These research results can also be used in research in other parts of China and Asia, such as India (arsenic and fluoride).

There is no doubt that GTIIT will have a promising future!

As a brand-new Sino-foreign university, it is a milestone for GTIIT to get such an amazing achievement.

GTIIT is a Sino-foreign polytechnic university co-established by the Technion and Shantou University.

As the first university that introduces quality educational resources from Israel to China, the establishment of GTIIT has been fully supported by Guangdong Government, Shantou Municipal Government and Li Ka-Shing Foundation.

GTIIT will focus on educating pioneering leaders, researchers and scientists with global vision and developing into a world-renowned research university in the fields of high level education, scientific research and innovation.

GTIIT started to recruit undergraduate and postgraduate students from 2017 and 2018 respectively. Currently, GTIIT has 479 undergraduate students totally. GTIIT strives to recruit outstanding faculty members globally according to the standards of Technion and over 65% of the current faculty members are assigned by the Technion.

What makes GTIIT so special?

Lecture-Tutorial method: GTIIT introduces Lecture-Tutorial method, which means that each theoretical lecture is accompanied by a tutorial so that students can practice the practical aspects of the knowledge they acquired in the lecture. The teaching method in the tutorials is in small groups and encourages question asking and involvement of the students in the class.

Studies period: Drawing lessons from distinguished universities such as MIT and Technion, GTIIT is dedicated to implement a step by step curriculum, from basic knowledge to professional application, from career development to industrial practice.

Preparation period: All freshmen are required to participate in a five-week preparation course, which consists of Technical English, mathematics and physics learning. The instruction language in the period is English and it is designed to give students a solid foundation in math, physics and English, and get them prepared for the formal academic semester.

Internationalization: Over 90% of the current faculty members are foreigners and teaching language in GTIIT is English. GTIIT offers students opportunities to take part in international programs during their undergraduate study.
