Jacob Katriel

Visiting Professor, Chemistry Program

jacob.katriel@gtiit.edu.cn

Overview

Obtained the B.Sc. (Summa cum laude, 1967), M.Sc. (1970) and D.Sc. (1972) degrees at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1973 [professor since 1982, incumbent, Abronson Family Chair of Chemistry, since 1989]. Served as Head of the Physical Chemistry Division (19841986) and as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry (1989-1991), as well as on many Technion committees and at the Technion Faculty Union.

Conducted, published and presented research on the quantum theory of matter and radiation (atomic and molecular electronic structure, theory of phase transitions, quantum optics) and on related mathematical techniques, in particular concerning the quantum-mechanical many-body problem.

Also conducted research at the Nuclear Research Center - Negev (1967-1973), and on sabbatical and other academic visits in universities and research institutes in Europe, Asia and North-America.

Teaching experience, in addition to courses in physical and quantum chemistry at the Technion, includes graduate and undergraduate courses at Ben Gurion University, Beer-Sheva (Israel), The Wiezmann Institute of Science, Rehovoth (Israel), The Open University (Israel), The Nazareth Academic Institute (Israel) and the University of Washington, Seattle (USA).

Was member of the editorial boards of the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry and of the Journal of Mathematical Chemistry.

Research Interests

  • Electronic structure: Excited atoms, confined atoms, quantum dots, atoms embedded in plasmas.

  • Applications of q-analysis: q-bosons, q-Stirling numbers, the q-BCH formula.

  • Representation theory of the symmetric group. Partition identities.
