The Biotechnology and Food Engineering Program (group of Prof. Ka Yin Leung) is looking for one Lab Manager to look after the operation of my lab (Lab for Molecular Microbiology of Fish). This person is also a Senior Microbiologist who serves as manager of a teaching lab for undergraduate students of General Microbiology or Food Microbiology.

Contract duration: initially for one year and renewable (with a three-month probation period)

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Research lab duties: 

- Conduct or assist in conducting experiments in the lab, including prepare media and reagents, interpret data and analyze the results, and assist the undergraduate students working in the lab.

- Setup, organize, maintain, and troubleshoot lab equipment; order needed equipment, materials and consumables; organize and ensure all bookkeeping and accounting for the lab is correct. 

- Oversee the general operation and safety of the bio-safety level 2 (P2) labs and fish holding facility; teach undergraduate students attaching to the research lab.

Duties for both research and teaching labs: 

- Ensure proper lab protocols and standard operation procedures (SOPs) are established and enforced, such as biosafety and biosecurity for P2 labs and proper use of chemicals and equipment. 

- Ensure that proper procedures are followed for disposal of chemical and microbiological wastes. Test and maintains safety equipment on a regular basis, oversee the maintenance of Materials Safety Data Sheets’ (MSDS) record and SOPs. Ensures that all safety procedures are consistently met.

Teaching lab duty: 

Establishing and running new teaching laboratories (General Microbiology or Food Microbiology); preparing and operating the laboratory; student training; teaching new users in operating the equipment, responsibility for laboratory infrastructure and safety issues.

Selection Criteria: 

Education: PhD degree in Microbiology/Biotechnology/Biology or related fields; Emergency First Aid certification (preferable)  

Experience: working experience in lab preparation, solution preparation, co-ordination, development and operation of advanced biological equipment; excellent knowledge and deep understanding of the material in the relevant course.

Equipment Used: All equipment normally found in a P2 microbiology laboratory.

Skills: Superior interpersonal and management skills. Have basic computer skill as it pertains to lab instrumentation. Good conflict resolution skills and be able to work independently without much supervision. Teaching experience, preferably in English is an advantage.

Abilities: Able to operate and troubleshoot lab equipment and instruments and have the ability to learn new techniques. Ability of reading scientific papers and adopting procedures.

Personal: Warm-hearted, dedicated, committed and mature; a pleasant personality with a positive and friendly attitude in the midst of a very busy and challenging university atmosphere.

Training: Travel to the Technion in Haifa, Israel for a training period before the labs start.
