After one academic year of theoretical study, the sophomores of GTIIT will enter the lab for experimental study in the new semester. In order to strengthen the awareness of lab safety among teachers and students, GTIIT EHS Office and the lab teachers conducted the pre-course before lab on October 12th. Students from Chemical Engineering Program and Biotechnology and Food Engineering Program participated in the class.
Dr. Michail Paraskevas, Manager of the Analytical Chemistry Lab, told the students that we paid great attention to safety rules because safety comes first. The purpose of this lesson is to let them know what they should do in the lab and what rules they need to follow, and to help students remove their fear of experiments. "The Analytical Lab 1 is the first experiment for CE and BFE students. I hope they can enjoy this process and feel comfortable in the lab." He said this course aimed to let students learn basic analytical methods and techniques. In the practice, they can develop the ability to cooperate and communicate with others, and become efficient and well-organized in the lab.
Students watched videos of lab safety introduction and demonstration videos on the use of instruments. They also learned how to handle emergencies in the lab.
Wu Yiting, a sophomore from Chemical Engineering Program, said she gained a lot from the pre-course before lab. "Lab safety should come first. Before the experiment, we should know the use of relevant instruments and the nature of the chemicals involved in the experiment. We need to cooperation with team members to better complete the experiment."
He Qixi, a sophomore from Biotechnology and Food Engineering Program, said she was worrying about making mistakes in experiments before the class. "The teacher told us that mistakes are normal and we didn't need to be afraid of experiments. Now I'm really looking forward to my first lab class and doing experiments by myself!"
Lab teachers distributed safety glasses, lab coats and other personal protective equipment as well as lab safety manuals to students. Students must pass the lab safety training and assessment and sign the safety commitment before entering the lab.
"We hope the students are aware of the importance of lab safety while learning about the basic standard of lab operation." Samuel Xu, Officer from GTIIT EHS Office, also hoped that students can pay more attention to the safety problems in the daily life through this class.
