On March 13, Prof. David Gershoni, Vice Chancellor of Guangdong Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT), received the first Guangdong Friendship Award.

Guangdong Friendship Award is awarded every three years by Guangdong Provincial Government. Prof. David Gershoni, together with 48 winners received the award, for their outstanding contributions to Guangdong’s development and foreign exchanges.

Since Prof. David Gershoni's being the Vice Chancellor of GTIIT from 2021, he helped build GTIIT into a world-class research university that cultivates a new generation of scientists, engineers, innovators and entrepreneurs who will drive the economic and social growth of Shantou, of Guangdong, of China and Israel and beyond.

At the awarding ceremony, Prof. David Gershoni delivered a speech as the representative of Guangdong Friendship Award winners. He pointed out that GTIIT is uniquely positioned to foster collaborations between Chinese and Israeli educators, researchers and entrepreneurs. "Our partnership is well founded in our deep and mutual respect of knowledge and education, which have been common to the cultures of both nations for thousands of years. Both cultures share the understanding that education and technology holds the key to a better future, and GTIIT is our gateway into this collective future," he said.

"I am honored to be part of this endeavor and I will do my best to promote the development of GTIIT and to strengthen the friendship between Israel and Guangdong in general and between Haifa and Shantou in particular. I believe that GTIIT symbolizes the crown of the Chinese - Israeli collective relationships and I hope that GTIIT will blossom and flourish many more projects of brotherhood, sharing and friendship between these two ancient and great nations," noted by Prof. David Gershoni in the speech.

Prof. David Gershoni is a distinguished scientist in Nano-physics, former head of the Exact Sciences and Technology Area of Israel Science Foundation and he was made a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2004.

Recently, Prof. David Gershoni led his research group to publish in Nature Photonics an article titled "Deterministic generation of indistinguishable photons in a cluster state", which would advance the field of quantum information processing and quantum communication in particular.

Nature Photonics is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the Nature Publishing Group, covering research related to optoelectronics, laser science, imaging, communications, and other aspects of photonics. The papers that have been published in this journal are internationally acclaimed for maintaining high research standards. The Journal is regarded as top-ranking in the field of photonics, with the latest impact factor of 39.728.
