FAST FACTS


The Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) is a Sino-foreign cooperative educational institution established by Shantou University (STU) and  the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology( theTechnion) with independent legal status. As the only sino-foreign joint university focusing on science and technology, GTIIT is also acting as the China Campus of the Technion. GTIIT is located in the city of Shantou, Guangdong province.


The Ministry of Education approved GTIIT's formal establishment on December 5, 2016. GTIIT is modeled on the Technion, a leading university in Haifa, Israel and throughout the world.  GTIIT is the flagship program in the cooperation between China and Israel, and has been fully supported by the Guangdong Provincial Government, Shantou Municipal Government and Li Ka Shing Foundation. (LKSF)


The vision of GTIIT is to become a world-class international university, conducting cutting-edge research in the fields of science and technology. This research will boost entrepreneurship and technology transfer, and foster a high-tech industrial ecosystem in Shantou and Guangdong Province. GTIIT cultivates pioneering scientists and researchers with innovation power, global vision and humanities.


GTIIT has been listed in the Guangdong High Level University Development Program. Four disciplines, including Materials Science and Engineering, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Environmental Engineering are listed as key disciplines.


English is GTIIT's language of instruction. GTIIT will be comprised of three colleges: the College of Engineering; the College of Science; and the College of Life Sciences. The goal is to have about 5,000 students eventually. The institute will eventually grant Technion engineering degrees at all levels - Bachelor, Masters and PhD, and maintain the high academic standards of education, research and innovation for which the Technion's Haifa campus is world-renowned. Graduates will receive a GTIIT graduation certificate, degree certificate and Technion degree certificate.


Prof. Gong Xingao, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Principal scientist of the Major Scientific Research Programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Fellow of the American Physical Society, is the Chancellor of GTIIT.


Prof. David Gershoni, distinguished scientist in nano-physics, former head of the Exact Sciences and Technolog Field of Israel Science Foundation, is the Vice Chancellor of GTIIT.



The GTIIT logo represents the cultural origins of each of the partners, as well as their harmonious collaboration. The Hebrew letter "Tet" represents Technion, the red flower stands for Shantou, and the phoenix for Shantou University.






The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (Technion), is Israel's oldest university with a long tradition of innovation. Technion is a world –leading institution, consistently ranked among the world's top 50 science and technology research universities. Since its founding in 1912, Technion has remained a place dedicated to pioneering new technologies, where creative individuals continually strive to anticipate the needs of emerging technologies and science.


Today, Technion is a city of advanced research and learning and the birthplace of many of Israel's most exciting tech innovations. Set on a modern campus in Haifa, it is home to a prominent faculty, among them three recent Nobel laureates, with a long list of notable alumni including engineers, scientists, physicians, professors, and entrepreneurs. It was recently acknowledged as one of the world's leading entrepreneurial ecosystems and incubator for future successful entrepreneurs. Indeed, Technion has played a leading role in fostering Israel's "Start-Up Nation" economy.


GTIIT will be modeled on the Technion, and will be able to leverage the strengths of the Technion in engineering and science -- not only in research and education, but also in innovation.

----Bloomberg ranked Technion in 7th place for producing CEOs of American technology companies worth over $1 billion.

----Technion has the second highest number of foreign associates in the US National Academy of Engineering.

----Technion was ranked in 8th place for top universities producing Nobel laureates.

----Technion was ranked 6th worldwide for innovation and entrepreneurship in a recent MIT survey.

----Half of Israeli companies traded on NASDAQ were founded by Technion graduates.

Shantou University (STU), founded in 1981,is a comprehensive university jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. It is the only public university in the world that receives long-term funding from the Li Ka Shing Foundation. The University campus is located in the northwestern part of Shantou, a seaside city, covering a total area of 1.26 square kilometers with a floor space of 435,200 m2. 


STU consists of 8 colleges and schools, namely, College of Liberal Arts, College of Sciences, College of Engineering, Medical College, Law School, Business School, Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, and Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication. It enrolls qualified students from all over the country (including Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Taiwan). Currently, STU has 1 National Key Discipline, offers Cheung Kong Scholar Professorships, provides 5 Postdoctoral Programs, 1 Doctoral Program for first-level discipline and 25 Doctoral Programs for second-level disciplines, 10 Master's Programs for first-level disciplines and 84 Master's Programs for second-level disciplines, as well as 7 Professional Master's Degree Programs. It also has 7 National Distinctive Programs, 1 National Key Laboratory, 6 Provincial Key Laboratories, and 2 National Pilot Sites for Innovative Talents Training. Currently, STU has 1,540 staff members and over 10,056 students and has nurtured over 90,000 graduates.


STU library has been digitalized to meet the growing need for an electronic library. The affiliated hospitals, including the First Affiliated Hospital, a tertiary hospital that was awarded the "Nation's 100 Best Hospitals", with a total of 5,523 patient beds, provide ample opportunities for student training.


Since its inception, Shantou University has received a generous support from the distinguished philanthropist and international entrepreneur, Mr. Li Ka-shing. The Li Ka Shing Foundation has earmarked grants of HK$8 billion through 2018 to support Shantou University (Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business included). Mr. Li has given his heart and soul to the development of the University, a manifestation of his lofty ideal to "serve the good of all" and his firm conviction that education is vital to the young generation of the country.


In September 2013,the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and Shantou University signed a Memorandum of Understanding for jointly establishing Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT), an institution of higher learning in Shantou. On April 9th 2015, the Ministry of Education approved the preparation for the establishment of GTIIT.


Shantou University is committed to offering student-centered education with the educational idea of "Building Up Oneself for the Pursuit of One's Selflessness". It is engaged in reforms related to university governance and talent development,and also planning to relocate Medical College into the main campus and to develop a globally advanced curriculum focusing on life science. Since 2001, the University has conducted a profound internationalization-oriented reform, and overseas talents have been recruited to serve as provost, vice president and deans. Through a series of reforms in curriculum design, teaching, resources management and human resources system, it aims to offer a platform for the exploration of higher educational reform in China.
