The Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) is a Sino-foreign cooperative educational institution established by Shantou University (STU) and  the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology( theTechnion) with independent legal status. As the only sino-foreign joint university focusing on science and technology, GTIIT is also acting as the China Campus of the Technion. GTIIT is located in the city of Shantou, Guangdong province.

The Ministry of Education approved GTIIT's formal establishment on December 5, 2016. GTIIT is modeled on the Technion, a leading university in Haifa, Israel and throughout the world.  GTIIT is the flagship program in the cooperation between China and Israel, and has been fully supported by the Guangdong Provincial Government, Shantou Municipal Government and Li Ka Shing Foundation. (LKSF)

The vision of GTIIT is to become a world-class international university, conducting cutting-edge research in the fields of science and technology. This research will boost entrepreneurship and technology transfer, and foster a high-tech industrial ecosystem in Shantou and Guangdong Province. GTIIT cultivates pioneering scientists and researchers with innovation power, global vision and humanities.

GTIIT has been listed in the Guangdong High Level University Development Program. Four disciplines, including Materials Science and Engineering, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Environmental Engineering are listed as key disciplines.

English is GTIIT's language of instruction. GTIIT will be comprised of three colleges: the College of Engineering; the College of Science; and the College of Life Sciences. The goal is to have about 5,000 students eventually. The institute will eventually grant Technion engineering degrees at all levels - Bachelor, Masters and PhD, and maintain the high academic standards of education, research and innovation for which the Technion's Haifa campus is world-renowned. Graduates will receive a GTIIT graduation certificate, degree certificate and Technion degree certificate.

Prof. Gong Xingao, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Principal scientist of the Major Scientific Research Programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Fellow of the American Physical Society, is the Chancellor of GTIIT.

Prof. David Gershoni, distinguished scientist in nano-physics, former head of the Exact Sciences and Technolog Field of Israel Science Foundation, is the Vice Chancellor of GTIIT.

The GTIIT logo represents the cultural origins of each of the partners, as well as their harmonious collaboration. The Hebrew letter "Tet" represents Technion, the red flower stands for Shantou, and the phoenix for Shantou University.
