Sometimes you may feel like that you can't remember all the words, the grammar is so confusing, writing is hard to improve and you can't even speak fluently. Well, these are common things that may happen to every English learner. Buy for He Hanglin, a sophomore  of Materials Engineering, this could be a difficulty, but also an opportunity. In his opinion, watching American TV series could be a tool for these problems.

I still remembered what a teacher said when I joined an English activity in primary school. "If you only familiarize with the words, you will only be able to say individual words. But if you are familiar with forming a sentences, then sentences will be the things that you are capable of saying. Furthermore, once you are able to grasp an article, then you will have the ability to deliver a speech." What I have learned from this is that we have to master the words first. Words are the fundamental part of a sentence. Many different words may have the same meaning in Chinese but they actually have different usage. Take except and besides as examples, they are not exactly the same in Chinese. Another example would be words like good, wonderful, excellent, tremendous, terrific or superb, they all have the same meaning in Chinese as "good". But the intensity is different. How can we use these words correctly? Watching TV series would be an excellent solution! Try to find series with interactive subtitles so you can see what the words mean and then hear them used.

After a long period of general listening, your brain will be stimulated by the same word that appears in the TV series many times and you will gradually memorize many different words at the same time. As the saying goes "Many a little (or pickle) makes a mickle"then you won't panic solving the problem in the English exams.

More importantly, you can't just focus on the words. Just like letters build words, words build sentences. Sentences build language, and give it personality. So, after you understand the basic part of words, we should advance to sentences or articles comprehension In other words, that is how we express ourselves in sentences. This is also crucial to reading questions. It's easy to find that the Chinese words order is very different form English. For example, "I didn't go to bed until 11pm last night" this sentence if firstly seen in our mind in the order of a Chinese sentence would be like "I went to bed at 11pm last night". It seems reasonable. But when we look deeper, we will find the information "I stayed up until 11pm (and now I may be a little tired and sleepy)" we try to emphasize in the first sentence was missing in the second one. That is how Chinglish is "created (--not intentionally)" in the first place. So there is no way to make sense of the Chinese words order from English. What we actually care about is how to fix this problem and avoid using Chinglish in our daily conversation. English Series can be helpful. Each series gives some expressions that you may have never heard before. Next time when you are enjoying the stories of the series, you should try to focus more on their expressions (grammar, rhetoric and so on). This is one of the best ways to learn how a native English speaker express him(or her)self in their own language. With more practice, you will be an excellent English speakers.

Generally speaking, while taking an exam, you can jump out of the frame and  find your own way. Personally, I will start from Fill in the blanks, then browse the title of Writing Part. Then I will finish the Reading comprehensionCloze test, and go back to Writing eventually.

Reading comprehension: the key is understanding the article and questions. In short, If the material is especially hard, read it three times. First, read the article fluently without seeing the questions. Second, read the questions and find their answers. Third, check your answers.

Cloze test: always remember to contact the context. In this part, there will be one or two questions asking about idiom or proverb. If we don't know them before, just follow your heart. This is so-called language sensewhich is developed consciously. We can develop it through movies, TV series, music, and books. However, it is time-consuming through the first two ways. I would recommend reading web fictions written by native speakers. They are usually easy to understand and fascinating, containing lots of idioms and sayings. Therefore, they are really good helpers for improving our English levels.

Fill in the blanks: practice more. Normally,  basic questions will be asked in this part. It is easy to conquer with good words, phrases, and grammar. Moreover, we have traces of test points. We can practice more, induce questions and browse notes frequently to get a better control to answer the questions.

Writing: good handwriting is crucial to exam success. Besides, you can memorize some advanced sentence patterns. But remember, more is not always better. We should prepare patterns according to different themes. In daily practice, I will go through the sentences in Chinese first, then translate the patterns into English, which saves a lot of time during the exam.

Last but not least, check, check, check. Be sure to check your answers. Wish you all the best in the English exam.
