The 2020 National Natural Science Award was announced today. The project "The Creation and Application of Ordered Mesoporous Polymers and Carbon Materials" led by Zhao Dongyuan, who is the Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor of Department of Chemistry in Fudan University and Visiting Professor of Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, won the first prize.

The award-winning project "The Creation and Application of Ordered Mesoporous Polymers and Carbon Materials" is led by Academician Zhao Dongyuan and completed together with Li Wei, Deng Yonghui and Zhangfan. It originally raises the idea of organic-organic self-assembly and creates ordered mesoporous polymers and carbon materials, revealing mesoporous' regular pattern of material transport and interface reaction.

The project focuses on the creation of ordered mesoporous polymers and carbon materials, being cited for 3,825 times and regarded as an "initial, monumental and pioneering" discovery by international peers. Academician Zhao Dongyuan ranks the first in the world in terms of publications and citations in the field of mesoporous materials, the world's top 1,000 scientists in all fields, and the most-cited scientists in chemistry and mesoporous materials (eight times). He is the President of International Mesostructured Materials Association (IMMA) and has received many important international awards, such as the IMMA Achievement Award, the TWAS Award, etc.

The first prize of National Natural Science is the highest award in the realm of natural science in China, aiming to reward Chinese citizens who have made significant scientific contributions to the elucidation of natural phenomena, characteristics and laws in the field of basic and applied research. Due to its strict requirements, the first prize has been left vacant for times.
