What is it like to study basic academic disciplines at GTIIT?

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged efforts to strengthen the cultivation of talents in basic academic disciplines and train a large number of basic research talents urgently needed for China's innovation-driven development at the 24th Meeting of the Central Commission for Deepening Overall Reform.


Basic academic disciplines require great accumulation and the cultivation of basic academic disciplines talent needs long-term efforts. Even so, there are still countless students who pursue these disciplines and find the charm of research.


What is it like to study basic academic disciplines at a science and technology university? Why do the students choose to study them? How will they apply what they have learned in the future? GTIIT students will talk about their experience and expectations for the future based on their own study and life.

Take Mathematics with Computer Science as an example. It can not only challenge the frontier of science and technology in the world, promote the development of computer science through systematic mathematical thinking training; but also be put into the main economic battlefield and contribute to the construction of world-class enterprises. When it comes to tackling the country's major needs, professionals in the fields of mathematics and computer science are also able to solve a range of difficult problems with a solid foundation in basic disciplines.

GTIIT's emphasis on basic disciplines and unique specialty settings provide us with more opportunities. As Chinese, our personal destiny has long been closely linked with that of our country. No matter which path mentioned above is chosen, it is a fertile soil to realize personal value. I firmly believe that my classmates and I will make a contribution to the construction of our country after graduation.

Science and technology are the foundation for national prosperity, and innovation is the soul of national progress. Technion-Israel Institute of Technology is a world-renowned research university, and as its Chinese campus, GTIIT has the same advanced educational philosophy and talent cultivation system, attaching great importance to the cultivation of research-oriented talents.

Take my major Mathematics with Computer Science as an example, which has been teased by the professor from the Technion as one of the most difficult programs while it certainly lives up to its name. Many courses are profound and extensive, and professors have high requirements on students. It is not easy to get a good grade, but the students who can overcome these difficulties will probably become outstanding talents in basic academic disciplines in the future. Secondly, under the small-class teaching system, students are encouraged to think deeply, and the communication and discussion between teachers and students are more frequent. Students can get access to the cutting-edge technology and even join the professors' research projects.

All these characteristics are the great advantages of cultivating basic academic disciplines and research-oriented talents, which will be more powerful if students make full use of them.

To strengthen the training of talents in basic research, we need to enhance the sense of responsibility and mission of innovation subjects. Basic research determines what kind of scientific and technological innovation can be realized, and talents play a leading role in it. As a Sino-foreign cooperative institute of science and technology, GTIIT enjoys multiple advantages -- basic disciplines education including mathematics, physics, chemistry and life science; outstanding faculty, cutting-edge facilities and innovative education methods create an open and inclusive academic environment; international cooperation provides a better platform to cultivate high level science and technology talents.

Mathematics is an important foundation for other subjects. I am very happy that I am studying mathematics and computer science at GTIIT, where we learn mathematical proofs, different branches of mathematics, establish our mathematical foundation and develop mathematical thinking from the most basic production of natural numbers and the axioms of set theory. At the same time, we also received in-depth education in computer science, including system programming, data structure, assembly language and operating system. The learning environment here is open and inclusive, and the professors are responsible. More importantly, the teaching program is based on the teaching experience of the Technion, which is in line with the development history of international basic disciplines. I believe that in the future, GTIIT will produce a lot of high-quality talents in this field for the country.

Strengthening the training of basic academic discipline talents can help to improve the impetuous atmosphere of seeking quick success and instant benefits, and lay a solid foundation for the country's future scientific and technological progress.

GTIIT is a university that emphasizes the cultivation of talents in basic academic disciplines. First of all, I think its biggest advantage lies in the strict assessment system, which forces students to study carefully instead of lazing away. Secondly, the curriculum of GTIIT covers a wide range of subjects, so the students who can finish these courses will have rich and solid knowledge. In addition, the excellent scientific research conditions of GTIIT enable its students to participate in the research at the undergraduate stage. Such an early start undoubtedly has many advantages.

Basic academic disciplines lay the groundwork for the ability of scientific research and innovation. Only with a solid foundation can we prepare for the future research. Biotechnology and food engineering can be used in many ways, including research in biotechnology, food and even medicine. I plan to explore the direction I am interested in through the following elective courses and learn basic knowledge to lay a foundation for my postgraduate study.

Many technologies and applications are supported by science and theory, without which we cannot make more advanced applications, and these theories come from basic academic disciplines. Basic research takes a long time and is difficult to sustain without strong motivation. Interest is the biggest motivation for me to study basic subjects and engage in basic research. I am currently studying in Mathematics with Computer Science Program, which is the foundation of basic disciplines. Mathematics is the art of the rules, as well as the reasons behind the relationship between quantity and form in the world. The world of mathematics and physics is very rich and attractive.

The MCS department at GTIIT provides a good environment for us, where I can place my aspiration and interest, and also conforms to the national trend of training basic academic discipline talents. Don't be too utilitarian in learning math. I hope to deepen my study in mathematics and physics, make good use of the platform of my university, be diligent and unremitting, lay a solid foundation, form my own views and make contributions to the basic science of our country and even the human society in the future.
