Nan'ao Symposium Session 1-- Quantum Materials and Manipulation (2022) kicked off at GTIIT

From July 24th to 26th, the Nan'ao Symposium Session 1-- Quantum Materials and Manipulation (2022) will be held in Shantou. Today, the opening ceremony of the symposium was held at Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT). As the first session of the Symposium, it was jointly initiated by Prof. Gong Xingao, Chancellor of GTIIT, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and professor of Fudan University, as well as CAS Academician Duan Wenhui, professor of Tsinghua University, and was organized and hosted by Prof. Zhou Shuyun of Tsinghua University.

The symposium was organized by Fudan University and Tsinghua University, and co-organized by GTIIT and Shantou Science and Technology Bureau. It invited specialists and scholars from well-known research institutes and universities, including Fudan University, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Nanjing University, University of Science and Technology of China, Soochow University, and Institute of Physics Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOP), to give presentations and share ideas. Participants shared academic knowledge on cutting-edge scientific issues of quantum materials and manipulation, and discussed the future research directions and challenges.

CAS Academician Gong Xingao, Chancellor of GTIIT and professor of Fudan University, extended a warm welcome to all participants in his opening speech. He said that quantum materials and manipulation was a major strategic need of national development and hoped that this symposium could provide an easing and open platform for intellectual discussion and contribute to the development of related industries in Shantou.

CAS Academician Duan Wenhui, professor of Tsinghua University, said in his address that the symposium has provided a rare opportunity for scholars in this field to discuss and exchange ideas, learn from each other and bring about more innovation and creativity.

Condensed Matter Physicist, CAS Academician and professor of Tsinghua University Zhu Bangfen introduced that quantum materials manipulation was currently a hot research frontier internationally. "How to control its current, optical properties and other properties is currently of international concern. It has many important application prospects, such as integrated circuits, quantum computers and quantum information. Once it has a breakthrough, it will have a revolutionary impact."

Ms. Chen Yanli, Director of Shantou Science and Technology Bureau, extended a warm welcome to the academicians, experts and scholars and wished the conference a great success. With the city's development idea of "establish the city with industry, strengthen the city with industry", she hoped that such symposium would be held in a regular manner to create a strong academic and scientific atmosphere in Shantou, promote the high-quality development of scientific research in related fields and support Shantou’s construction of national innovation city and regional innovation center.

Quantum materials and manipulation is an important scientific frontier in the field of international physics and materials, and also a major demand for information technology and social development in the future. Researchers have made a series of forward-looking basic scientific research exploration and technological breakthroughs, as well as a number of important original achievements. 



At the symposium, scholars convened to present reports on their latest research progress.

During the conference, Prof. Zhang Tong of Fudan University, Researcher Zhang Guangyu of Institute of Physics Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Zhou Shuyun of Tsinghua University and Prof. Yin Wanjian of Soochow University will also give reports on iron-based superconductor, exploration of ultra-thin semiconductor materials and devices, AI in material design, etc.



The symposium will better promote academic exchanges in the field of quantum materials, speed up the breakthrough of basic research and key technologies, explore ideas for collaboration between universities and local governments, and support high-level scientific research and application of technological achievements in related fields in China.
