On August 9, a delegation from the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory led by Prof. Wang Weihua, the Laboratory Director and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), visited Guangdong Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT). During the visit, both sides had a fruitful discussion about future collaboration.
Addressing a warm welcoming speech, Prof. Gong Xingao, Chancellor of GTIIT and Academician of CAS, introduced the university’s robust and comprehensive curriculum as well as its favourable prospect of talent training. The pursuit of building a valuable university is of importance. Thus, with GTIIT’s highly international nature, both sides can complement each other and work together for a shared future.
Prof. Lin Danming, Pro-Vice Chancellor of GTIIT, gave an all-round introduction including GTIIT’s teaching resource, talent cultivation and discipline construction. Professors from Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Chemical Engineering (CE), Mechanical Engineering and Robotics (ME) briefly covered their research field and progress. Then they discussed with heads of different departments of the Laboratory.
Prof. Daniel Tan, Deputy Head of MSE and Director of the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Materials and Technologies for Energy Conversion (MATEC), detailed the development of MATEC. Built as a cross-discipline, high-level and international key research platform, MATEC has received a research grant from the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province in 2021. It was based on GTIIT’s international talent resources and cutting-edge facilities which meet the needs of bolstering technology and industry in Guangdong Province and has great potential. Prof. Tan believed that GTIIT and Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory can join forces in various aspects, like talent cultivation and basic research.
During the seminar, Prof. Wang gave an overview of the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory. As one of the first provincial labs in Guangdong, the Laboratory has formed a whole chain innovation model of “frontier basic research→application basic research→industrial basic research→industrial transformation”, and has accumulated unique experiences in all areas. Prof. Wang affirmed the excellence of GTIIT’s training mode and high-qualified students who could soon meet the research requirements of the lab. He hoped both sides could jointly explore higher levels of cooperation and achieve synergistic development.
