Focusing on the major strategic needs of national development, the Nan'ao Science Conference will be held to strengthen the exchange of innovation resources internationally and domestically as well as to provide intellectual support for scientific and technological innovation under the support of the People's Government of Guangdong Province. On October 31, the Consultation and Exchange Meeting was held in Nan'ao Island to discuss the specifics of the Nan'ao Science Conference.
Experts and scholars from universities (Tsinghua University; Sun Yat-sen University; Southern University of Science and Technology; Anhui Normal University; the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen; Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology) and research institutes (Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Chinese Academy of Sciences Guangzhou Branch; Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Chemistry and Fine Chemicals), as well as leaders from Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, Guangdong Basic and Applied Basic Research Foundation and Shantou Science and Technology Bureau attended the meeting.
Wu Shiwen, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, said that the Conference would create an academic exchange platform for top scientists and young scientists at home and abroad in the field of basic research. Through this event, he hoped to further promote research and innovation, create a robust academic atmosphere and facilitate the sci-tech innovation in Shantou.
CAS Academician Gong Xingao, Chancellor of GTIIT, introduced GTIIT in terms of its vision, programs, faculty and research progress. The experts and scholars appreciated GTIIT’s aiming to build a high-level, international STEM university, affirmed its significance in the development of higher education in China, and hoped that GTIIT could make full use of the innovative advantages of the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology and have greater breakthroughs in the academic field.
Prof. Daniel Tan, Deputy Head of GTIIT Materials Science and Engineering Program, outlined the progress and achievements of Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Materials and Technologies for Energy Conversion (MATEC) in research output, academic exchanges and university-enterprise cooperation since its establishment. Prof. Harold Corke from Biotechnology and Food Engineering Program and Prof. Wang Yan from Chemical Engineering Program reported the research direction and team members of the Active Health Advanced Engineering Technology Laboratory.
As the focus of global competition in science and technology has shifted to basic research, the Conference will gather high-level talents in basic research and management science at home and abroad and provide a platform for discussion and innovative thinking.
The participants discussed the specifics of the preparation program, and gave suggestions on how to attract talents, build an open platform for academic exploration, etc. to further accelerate the implementation.
