Recently, Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) was listed on the first batch of Water-saving Universities in Guangdong Province published by the Water Resources Department of Guangdong Province, Department of Education of Guangdong Province and Guangdong Provincial Energy Bureau. This is an important achievement of GTIIT in green development, energy conservation and emission reduction.
GTIIT has explored some effective ways in the construction of water-saving facilities, water management, as well as water-saving publicity and education.
Water-saving measures at GTIIT
As a sponge campus, 65.4% of the ground area in GTIIT is permeable pavement, with the porous materials to improve the ground permeable performance. The campus ecological artificial lake covers an area of 3425㎡. Rainwater from the building roof and road surface is collected and purified under the ecological purification project, aiming to maintain the balance of water ecology and create beautiful scenery.

The campus greening water supply adopts a water-saving irrigation method that combines micro-sprinkler irrigation and drip irrigation. Micro-sprinkler irrigation is used in large spaces while drip irrigation is used in small spaces. The automated irrigation system realizes functions such as precise irrigation, remote control and detection by setting different programs to save water, energy and manpower. The system sets the irrigation time in the early morning to reduce evaporation, and uses the rain sensor to control the system to stop irrigation on rainy days.
GTIIT South Campus has set up a 1,000m³ rainwater collection module, which collects rainwater through a series of processes such as filtration and then supplies it for greening irrigation. It is expected to save 12,000m³ of water for greening every year. The "Rain Garden" on South Campus collects and absorbs ground rainwater. The rainwater falls to the collection device, and the water that exceeds the water level will flow into the collection tank for daily irrigation. In addition, water-saving appliances with first-class water efficiency are used on campus.

STEM programs contribute to water saving
GTIIT's programs focused on the environment, energy and human health, aiming to promote STEM talents cultivation and scientific and technological innovation. There are ecological related programs at GTIIT, such as Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Engineering, etc. Among them, the course "Biological Processes in Environmental Engineering" of Chemical Engineering Program is based on the current ecological environment conditions and also integrates theory into practice. In addition, the Environmental Science and Engineering Program also offers a number of courses related to sewage treatment process, air pollution and human health, soil chemistry, etc.
Water-saving publicity and education are carried out on a regular basis at GTIIT to improve teachers and students' water-saving awareness. For example, experts and scholars from world-renowned universities and research institutions were invited to give academic lectures involving environmental science and biotechnology, such as "Moving Wastewater From Treatment to Resource". In addition, GTIIT teachers and students integrated innovative thinking and technical measures to overcome key problems and promote Lian River pollution control.
