On November 21,the "GT Data Group" team composed of students from Guangdong Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) stood out among more than 500 teams, becoming one of the 12 teams shortlisted for the final round of 2023 Shanghai Big Data Competition of Smart New Energy Vehicle. Chen Mingxi and Lyu Dongtao, two GTIIT freshmen, won the "Excellence Award" with the project of "Data-driven Analysis of Battery Degradation of New-Energy Vehicles".
The competition was led by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, and Auto Talents Committee of China Talents Society. Focused on the hot trending issues within the new-energy vehicle industry such as intelligent vehicles, battery health, driving safety, and "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" goals, the organizers sought for solutions or products from universities, scientific research institutes, individuals, enterprises, and maker teams around the world.
The fierce competition attracted 554 teams from 145 universities around the world. The competitors were required to manage the historical data of the research objects, use various tools and algorithm models for quantitative evaluation and provide insights and solutions to the problem.
Two teams formed by seven GTIIT freshmen participated in the competition. Zhen Haolan, Zhang Xinrong, Wu Weike, Liang Qiyin and Sun Yushan, competed to find the solution for "Automobile Risk Classification". Chen Mingxi and Lyu Dongtao teamed up to analyze "Battery Degradation" task. In the end, the "GT Data Group" team stood out and became the 12 teams shortlisted for the national final and won the "Excellence Award" of the competition with the project of "Data-driven Analysis of Battery Degradation of New-Energy Vehicles".
It is worth mentioning that the "GT Data Group" team is the only shortlisted team that is composed entirely of undergraduates, while the rest of the finalists are teams of postgraduates or doctoral students. The young team just entering the field of data science gained much experience and confidence from the preparation and participation of the competition.
The seven GTIIT freshmen participating in this competition come from a GTIIT data-science learning group, "GT Data Group". Shortly after the beginning of 2023 fall semester, the group became popular among the freshmen, providing a platform for students who are interested in data science and artificial intelligence technology. It attracted more than 40 freshmen from different programs and successfully held a series of learning activities, which covered various topics including "introduction to data science", "python and basic data processing", and "introduction to machine learning & deep learning". The team members cooperate with each other and keep exploring the science world, fully demonstrating the thirst for knowledge and great learning abilities of GTIIT students.

After several months of learning, the "GT Data Group" has come up with a sustainable development mode. They plan to involve in more fields and diversify their technologies. "GT Data Group" will be officially upgraded to "GT Science and Innovation Society" with the assistance of GT Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Center (GTEC), to attract more students who are interested in data science, AI and other related fields. It will provide a new learning and practice platform for students through discussion & sharing, outreach research and collaboration in competitions.
