World Water Day

March 22, 2024 is the 32nd “World Water Day” while March 22-28  is the 37th “China Water Week”. The United Nations announced the theme of World Water Day in 2024 as “Water for Peace”. China’s campaign commemorating World Water Day and China Water Week advocates for making good use of water resource with strict management.

To raise the awareness of water conservation and build a water-saving campus, Guangdong Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) held an activity to popularize scientific knowledge of “World Water Day” and “China Water Week” on March 22nd, inviting experts from Jinping District Agricultural, Rural and Water Affairs Bureau for water conservation information promotion.

The event site was crowded and lively in spring atmosphere. The staff distributed brochures and explained relevant knowledge to GTIIT members to arouse water-saving awareness on campus.


This activity also set up Q&A sessions. By scanning the QR code and answering 10 questions related to water conservation, GTIIT members could get the gifts. Through this session, they raised their awareness of water conservation and would further take actions to protect water resources.

As one of the first batch of Water-saving Universities in Guangdong Province, GTIIT has achieved great results in green campus development, such as the construction of water-saving facilities and water management.

What is World Water Day?


World Water Day celebrates water and inspires action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.


World Water Day is an annual United Nations Observance – held on 22 March – focusing on the importance of freshwater, coordinated by UN-Water and led by one or more UN-Water Members and Partners with a related mandate.


What is China Water Week?


Following the enactment of the "Water Law of the People's Republic of China" in 1988, the Ministry of Water Resources designated July 1st to 7th as "China Water Week." Considering the themes and content between World Water Day and China Water Week are basically the same, it was decided to change the date of "China Water Week" to March 22nd to 28th starting from 1994.


What can we do?


1.Close the faucet tightly
A faucet that is not closed tightly will drip approximately 3.6 liters of water per hour and approximately 86 liters of water per day.


2.Reducing bath time
Reducing bathing time by one minute can save about 5 liters of water.


3.Saving water while washing clothes
Soaking clothes before washing can reduce the number of rinses.


4.Learn relevant laws
In order to rationally develop, utilize, conserve and protect water resources, our country has formulated the "Water Law of the People's Republic of China", the "Water and Soil Conservation Law of the People's Republic of China", the "Water Pollution Prevention and Control Law of the People's Republic of China" and other relevant laws. We should be aware of the relevant laws and regulations to avoid illegal behavior in our daily lives.


5. Protection of water sources

Don't throw trash into water sources such as rivers and lakes when traveling outdoors.

Sewage from experiments containing hazardous chemicals should be collected and centralized, and direct discharge into sewers is prohibited.
