To further inherit and promote traditional Chinese culture, Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) recently held the annual Zongzi-making event. GTIIT students and teachers gathered at the South Campus canteen to make Zongzi and immerse themselves in the joyous festive atmosphere.

At the site, experienced Zongzi “masters” taught the beginners how to wrap Zongzi skilfully. The Zongzi filled with fragrance connected the participants in an interactive way.

Ms. Zheng Guanhong from the renowned traditional brand “Lao Chao Xing Food Co., Ltd.” elaborated on the characteristics of Chaoshan-style Zongzi, explained the origin and customs of the Dragon Boat Festival, and demonstrated the steps of Zongzi-making, enabling the attendees to further experience the profoundness of Chinese traditional culture.

Using ingredients such as glutinous rice, Chinese sausage, shrimp, and shiitake mushrooms as fillings, wrapped in fresh green Zongzi leaves, one and another Zongzi were folded into various shapes. Whether sweet or savory, with or without meat, the Zongzi catered to the diverse tastes of the participants.

Prof. Elissaios Stavrou, Deputy Dean of Graduate Studies of GTIIT, said that it’s his third time celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival here. “It’s very warm. We make and cook Zongzi with the students to celebrate the festival. I believe the Zongzi will be delicious!”

A freshman student named Luan Hongyi from Shandong also expressed his affection for the event. "Participating in this activity with foreign teachers helps promote Chinese traditions and allows them to perceive the charm of the Dragon Boat Festival.” The students wrapped Zongzi while sharing different customs of their hometowns amid a lively atmosphere.
