The enriching preparatory period has set the stage for the newcomers' academic journey at GTIIT. What courses are on offer during the undergraduate years here? How to select courses? And where can academic support be sought? This article will address these questions, offering clear guidance to facilitate our students' path to knowledge.

About the Preparatory Period
All freshmen have a 6-week Preparatory Period after registration. All students need to take courses in English and Learning Strategies. The Learning Strategies course, given by the UG Career and Learning Center, is designed to help students develop an enriched understanding of the learning process, and acquire essential academic success skills. Students majoring in engineering and the Chemistry programs take courses also in Math, Physics and Chemistry. Students from Mathematics with Computer Science Program are required to take courses in Math. Students must meet the requirements of each course in the Preparatory Period before they can proceed to the Winter Semester. Specific requirements for each subject can be found on the Moodle-UG page at https://moodle.gtiit.edu.cn/moodle/course/view.php?id=81#section-1.
If the final grade of any of the Preparatory Courses does not meet the specified requirements, the student must take the extended tutorial/workshop in the corresponding subject during the Winter Semester.
Students who do not meet the overall academic requirements of the Preparatory Period will follow a compulsory program tailored by their academic advisor in the Winter Semester, typically a 15-18 credit course plan.
The Preparatory Period course schedule can be found at: https://sites.gtiit.edu.cn/ug/34.html.
About Courses
GTIIT conducts regular semester teaching and summer semester courses, which students can choose according to their own learning progress and plans.
1. Course Checklist: The course checklists of each cohort and program are announced and available for students through the Moodle upon approval of each department/study program. Based on the checklist, students will check their completion of courses and credits at the beginning and end of each semester, as well as their graduation progress. Graduation review will be based on the course checklist as well.
2. Course Structure: There are basic core courses, program compulsory courses (PCC), program elective courses (PEC), general education courses (GE), physical education courses (PE), and China ideological and political courses (MOE). Except for PE and MOE courses, the credits for the rest of the courses are determined according to the requirements of their respective departments/study programs of the Technion.
Basic core courses include Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Technical English, etc. Program compulsory courses are determined by each department/study program. Students also need to choose program elective courses from the course list published by each department/study program to meet the corresponding credit requirements.
General education courses are mainly about humanities and arts. Each department/study program usually requires for at least 10 credits of general education courses, which are determined according to the specific credit requirements of the program. Students must complete at least 2 credits of physical education courses during their undergraduate studies, which can be completed at any time, but no more than 1 credit of physical education courses may be taken each semester.
3. Course Enrolment Rules & System: Generally students majoring in engineering and the Chemistry programs will have a maximum of 24 credits per semester, while students from Mathematics with Computer Science Program will have a maximum of 20 credits per semester. Students are recommended to select courses according to the course checklist.
In the first semester, students will not enrol in general education courses and ideological and political courses. In the second semester, a maximum of 1 general education course and 1 ideological and political course can be taken. All students are not allowed to take more than 2 general education courses per semester.
The course enrolment system opens 1-2 weeks before the start of each semester and closes at the end of the second teaching week of the semester. During this period, students are entitled to adjust their course enrolments.
4. Class Attendance: The class attendance is mandatory for all the first-year students and students with specific GPA from other cohorts. Failure to meet the requirements will affect the qualification for the final exams.
About Exams
1. Exam Periods: There are two final exam periods, Term A and Term B. Each student is entitled to participate in one or both exam terms. If a student participates in both terms, the last grade will be counted.
The passing grade for ideological and political courses is 60, while for other courses, it is 55.
2. Grade Publication: Students can view their exam papers and grades through the student academic interface.
3. Grade Calculation: The Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated based on the weighted average of course grades and credits, which is the main basis for evaluating students' academic performance.
If students are found to violate the learning and exam regulations, such as plagiarism or cheating in exams, the violations will be handled according to the academic disciplinary code.
About Student Status Management
Student status management includes the registration of new students, maintenance of student status, and registration of academic qualifications for graduates, etc. If students have any requests for changes in student status during their studies, please apply according to the “GTIIT Regulations of Student Status Management". The Undergraduate Studies Office provides corresponding support services for different student status change applications.
*Transferring between Study Programs: The major change process is required to be initiated after one semester of enrolment.
About Support to Studies
In general, whether a student is facing academic challenges is evaluated on indicators such as GPA, course success rate, credits obtained each semester, and the passing condition of compulsory program.
GTIIT provides the following support for students with academic challenges:
1. Academic Advisor: The head of each department/study program appoints academic advisors for each cohort of the program, all of whom are professors to help address students' learning-related questions. The Undergraduate Studies Office collects the specific academic conditions of students with unsatisfactory academic standing every semester and shares to the academic advisors. The advisors tailor course plans according to each student's learning progress and course completion, and regularly meet with students to help them focus on completing their courses and overcoming academic challenges.
In addition to academic challenges, if students encounter any academic-related issues, including course plans, learning methods, research interests, etc., they can communicate with academic advisors.
2. Peer Tutor Program: The UG Career and Learning Center recruits outstanding senior students as peer tutors, providing group learning, tutor Q&A, pre-examination tutoring, and other services every semester.
3. Academic Committee: The Academic Committee meetings for students with academic challenges are given regularly every semester. If a student continuously fails to adapt to the teaching pace and all-English teaching model, and continuously fails to complete specific compulsory program requirements, they are invited to attend the meeting. With the students' feedback, the committee analyses each student's specific academic situation, provides corresponding guidance and assistance, and urges students to communicate with their parents, and make plans more suitable for their own development and interests if necessary.
About Degrees
Students who meet the graduation and degree requirements of the undergraduate program will be awarded the degree from the Technion and GTIIT respectively, and the GTIIT graduation certificate.
About Academic Excellence Scholarships
Students with excellent academic performance during their studies will receive academic excellence scholarships upon evaluation, divided into levels in "Vice Chancellor’s List", "Dean’s List", and "Department/Program Head's List", with bonus and certificate awarded.
The scholarship evaluation is mainly based on the students' GPA and program ranking over the past academic year.
About Exchange Program
In principle, GTIIT students have the opportunity to visit the Technion or other partner universities for a summer or semester of exchange and study during their undergraduate studies.
Exchange programs to other partner institutions are generally open for application in the second or third year, and are approved to be carried out in the third year or the first semester of fourth year. The list of partner institutions and projects is regularly updated and published by the Technion.
