Recently, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Materials and Technologies for Energy Conversion (MATEC) held an academic poster competition in Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT). 30 graduate students, guided by MATEC faculty members, participated in the competition with their research output in colorful posters.
The competition centered around the lab's three main research directions: electro-mechanical conversion and technologies; energy storage and technologies; catalytic conversion and technologies. The posters covered various aspects such as materials' characterization, preparation techniques, and applied research. Graduate students from different fields designed posters to highlight their research achievements and presented them to professors and students on site.
Dr. Wang Nan, Associate Professor in GTIIT Materials Science and Engineering Program and Deputy Director of MATEC, introduced that this was the first time the lab held such competition, which actively engaged the students into signing up. He pointed out that the students demonstrated scientific attitudes, professional knowledge, and innovative research perspectives in their scientific fruits. This also reflected the strong innovative and academic atmosphere of MATEC.
The judges gave high recognitions on the students' performance, and said the event provided academic training opportunities for them and served as a communication platform between different programs. They looked forward to more such events to be held in GTIIT. Dr. He Xuezhong, Associate Professor in GTIIT Chemical Engineering Program, noted that the poster competition enhanced the students' creativity in graphic design. "We can see now 'good-looking' papers are more welcomed by the editors, that's why the contributors are encouraged to present their research in a vivid way."
The competitors said that working with other programs brought them with more valuable insights and suggestions. "It is a great opportunity to improve our presentation skills. You have to make it clear within a few minutes, so that someone from a different field can quickly gain the full picture of your paper. That's challenging," shared one of the participating students.
