The 4th "My Story with GTIIT" Speech Contest

In order to further enrich the cultural life on campus, fully demonstrate the diligent, pioneering and innovative spirit of GTIIT staff and students as well as enhancing the sense of responsibility and belonging, the 4th "My Story with GTIIT" Speech Contest will be held. The specific implementation plan of the contest is as follows:

Theme

Contestants can choose any one of the following four topics as the theme of their speech.

My Research Exploration in GTIIT
My talk with Challenges
Technology and Humanistic Care
Cross-border Integration, Infinite Innovation
From GTIIT to the World
Cultivating Talents, Shaping the Future
My Intercultural Exchange Experience in GTIIT

Format

Contestants will share their memorable stories, based on what they have experienced in GTIIT. The speech shall be given in English. In addition, parents are invited to participate in this speech contest. Parents can share stories related to GTIIT in the form of a video centered on their own feelings (the topic of choice can be customized), and the language is English. (Parents' videos will not be included in the selection of the contest, and each participating parent will receive a souvenir)

Competition schedule

Preliminary selection: In 20th November students from each cohort and staffs are encouraged to recommend several candidates to participate in the preliminary round. The judging panel will score anonymously and 10 contestants with highest total scores in each group will advance to the final round.

Final round: 29th November. The order of playing will be determined by random draw, which will be held half an hour before the final round.

Time: 29th November, 2024 19:00-21:00

Venue: GTIIT Auditorium (North Campus)

For the primary selection: 3-4 GTIIT English teachers will be invited.

For the final round: To be determined (3 internal judges and 2 external judges)

Evaluation method

Primary selection: The total score of preliminary round is 100 points, mainly from the following four aspects: theme, structure, language expression, innovation and highlights. The preliminary round will be scored by the panel of jury, and the average score will be taken after aggregation to two decimal places. In case of same scores, the number of finalists will be increased accordingly.

Theme (40 points)

(1) Title is eye-catching, relevant, original, concise and meaningful;

(2) Theme is clear and correct, has a sense of the times, relevance, and meets the requirements of the competition;

(3) Content can well express the theme;

(4) Content and theme are unified;

(5) The feelings expressed are sincere and touching.

Genre structure (30 points)

(1) The logical structure is rigorous and well-defined, with a main thread running through;

(2) The hierarchical structure (chapter and paragraph) is clear and logical;

(3) The overall structure is in a rigorous, natural, complete and well-proportioned manner.

Language expression (20 points)

(1) Language is fluent and logical;

(2) Presentation techniques are properly used;

(3) Expression is properly detailed and concise;

(4) The overall form is accurate, standardized, concise, natural and impressive.

Innovations and highlights (10 points)

(1) Have novel insights to conception and distinctive personality;

(2) Speech is written with literary skills;

(3) Chapter structure is unique.

Final round: The contestants will be scored based on four aspects: speech content, language expression, image, time control and overall impression. The total score is 100 points. After the judges have gave their scores, the highest score and the lowest score will be discarded while the remaining scores get averaged. If two contestants get the same score, the number of awards will be increased accordingly.

Speech content: 40 points.

The content of the speech is closely follow the theme, the theme is clear and profound, the tone is positive, the language is natural, fluent and full of true feelings.

Language expression: 30 points.

Requirement: off-script speech, loud voice, clear diction, appropriate speech speed, smooth expression, passionate, with speaking skills and appropriate movements.

Image: 10 points.

Contestants should dress neatly, be dignified and generous, behave naturally and appropriately, and reflect a vigorous spirit. Greeting is required when getting on and off the stage.

Time control: 10 points.

The speech is limited to 8-10 minutes. If the time is exceeded or too short, the judges will deduct points according to the situation.

Overall impression: 10 points.

The judges will make an evaluation of the overall speech quality based on the presentation of the speaker.

Prizes

Each group will be 1 first prize, 2 second prizes, 3 third prizes, 4 merit prizes, 1 best performance prize, and several participation prizes (all contributors will receive a souvenir).

Specific requirements

The contestants should prepare their speeches carefully. The language is English. The content of the speech should be closely related to the theme. The speech title is self-designed, the genre is not limited. the speech should be controlled within 2000 words in 8-10 minutes.

Contestants must submit their speeches in both paper and electronic form to the University Office by 20th November.

Other arrangements

The final round will have a lucky draw, which will take place after the Contestants have finished their speeches. 5 lucky audience members will be selected by the judges (drawn by the 5 judges one by one), and the lucky souvenirs will be distributed to the lucky audience by the staff.
