In April 25th-27th, Professor Noam Soker of Technion – Israel Institute of Technology visited Foshan Shimen High School, Dongguan Donghua High School and Guangdong Panyu High School, and gave scientific lectures to about 1000 students from Grade 10 to Grade 11, on the topic of “The source of elements in the universe”.

As a senior scientist in astrophysics and an excellent public speaker, Professor Soker delivered the speech in an easy-accepted but rigorous way. He talked about the formation of elements in the universe, from hydrogen and helium in the big bang to the formation of heavy elements, like iron and gold, in exploding stars. Also, he explained the formation of nebula. What’s more, Professor Soker shared with the students his experiences of starting scientific career by keeping questioning and exploring unknown knowledge.

The feedback and interactive performance of the student audience greatly impressed Professor Soker. In Shimen High School, he thought that many questions raised up by the students were also significant topics in international science discussion, which reflected their sense of discovering problems. In Dongguan Donghua High School, the discussions between professor and students made him excited and said to one of the students “May I shake your hands? You are all clever and some of you are even genius!”. In Guangdong Panyu High School, the 60-min lecture apparently could not satisfy the students. Many of them came to professor to have discussion and some of them even stayed for a long time.

Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology hopes that by having scientists to give science lectures in secondary schools, we bring more frontier scientific discoveries to middle school students, which may stimulate their enthusiasm to learn science and technology and help them establish their determination to serve the society by creating the future with technological innovation.
