May 24th - Herman Chan, Director of Technical Development Center and Engineering Excellence Department at Esquel, Cai Wei, Deputy General Manager of Yang Mei Garment Factory, and other top managers from textile community were invited to give a speech to GTIIT students, covering topics on future planning, self-cultivation, etc. Taking Esquel as an example, guests vividly illustrated how company culture impacted on management and decision-makings, after which they had an in-depth discussion with students. The atmosphere was lively.

Students were deeply absorbed and curious about Esquel, “the brand behinds brands.” When asked which kind of talents were most sought-after, Herman, who is in charge of automation innovation, stressed that “independent critical thinkers” were the most welcomed employees. “Submissive employees are outdated. Not all the decisions made by your seniors are right. It is critical for company to hire those daring to question.” That had said, staff shall have their professional judgements instead of going with the flows.

When it comes to the meaning of universities, Cai Wei, the Tsinghua graduate, shared his experiences. “Most graduate students enter the industry which is not closely related to their majors, but it doesn’t mean that university days are useless. Your university learning experiences can shape your mindsets. Probably you can no longer remember those formulas after leaving universities, but the logical thinking you develop in the university can guide you to handle problems and pick up new skills effectively.”

Esquel is the biggest manufacturer and exporter of cotton shirt in the world, whose business scopes cover cotton planting, spinning, weaving, dyeing, clothing making, accessories, packaging and retailing. With an annual turnover of more than 1.3 billion US dollars, Esquel provides some international brands with over one hundred million shirts, including Ralph Lauren, Muji, Nike, French crocodile, Hugo Boss and so on.
