A Magical Journey Through Centuries and Continents: 500 Years of Piano Music opened on the South Campus of Guangdong Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT). Internationally renowned pianist Michael Tsalka was joined by Chen Lehong, piano teacher of the GTAIS, and Zhang Bowen, a student of cohort 2023 in Materials Science and Engineering Program in GTIIT. Together, they led the audience on a musical voyage spanning regions and ages.
The concert blends Eastern and Western aesthetic across eras. Prof. Tsalka began with the stately Pavane. Next came Bach’s Sonata in A Major, a four-hand duet performed by Prof. Tsalka and Ms. Chen Lehong. Their harmonious interplay echoed both musical dialogue and the passing of artistic legacy.
Mozart’s Variations in F Major followed, by turns light and calm, embodying the spirit of Classicism. Zhang Bowen then presented Moonlight Over the Spring River. Its gentle, evocative Eastern melody formed a lyrical dialogue with the Western pieces before it.
The concert wove together five hundred years of music. From time-honored classics such as Pavane and Gnomenreigen to expressive modern works including The Woodcock’s Back View and Two Poems, One Meditation, the repertoire crossed boundaries of time and place. The audience listened quietly, immersed in the soothing power of music.
When the last note faded, the concert remained a vivid journey through music and a fine lesson in aesthetic education. As young performers shared the stage with an accomplished artist, seeds of beauty took root at GTIIT campus. Beyond scientific research, students embrace art, cherish passion and walk toward grace.
