The Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology(GTIIT) Affiliated International School was officially inaugurated this morning. As the first-of-its-kind international school in the East and West of Guangdong Province, it not only fills the gap of educational diversity in Shantou, but also promotes the development of Shantou as a provincial sub-center city.
Participants attending the ceremony included Dr. Lin Yimin, Vice Mayor of Shantou Municipality; Mr. Yigal Cohen, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Director General of GTIIT; Prof. Lin Danming, Pro-Vice Chancellor of GTIIT; Ms. Naama Avrchami, in-coming Pro-Vice Chancellor and Director General of GTIIT; Prof. Liu Wenhua, Vice President of Shantou University(STU); Mr. Dong Hu, Director of Shantou Education Bureau; Monking He, CEO of Guangdong ULink College Group; Ms. Lila Leung, Superintendent of GTIIT Affiliated International School and Ms. Anne Sweet, Director of GTIIT Affiliated International School.
Establishing an international school is regarded as critical to resolve the concerns for the education of GTIIT and STU overseas expatriate children, while attracting more high-level foreign talent to work in Shantou. The Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal People's Government attach great importance to the construction of the international school. Through joint efforts at all levels, the GTIIT Affiliated International School was successfully approved by the Provincial Education Department.
Located on GTIIT North Campus, the school is organized by function, including classrooms, reading rooms, painting rooms, music rooms and activity areas. It provides a fresh and natural atmosphere with vivid colors. The program provides GTIIT and STU overseas expatriate children with a U.S. style, English medium curriculum for kindergarten to Grade 6 in its first year of operation.
The school will provide two programs: the international program (AIS) for children of overseas expatriates, and the bilingual program (ABS) for children of Chinese nationals. In the first year of operation, it plans to enroll 45 students, offering Kindergarten to Grade 6. Additional grades will be added in subsequent years through to Grade 12. Due to space constraints, the GTIIT Affiliated International School will preferentially enroll children of STU and GTIIT overseas expatriates, and the remaining places will open to the public accordingly.
The bilingual program (ABS) for children of Chinese nationals has started construction and is scheduled to open in 2021 with the opening of the GTIIT South Campus. By then, the total number of students enrolled in the affiliated school will be 1,400.
