Position Description:
The Teaching Assistant (TA) supports the work of teachers and the school both inside and outside the classroom with tasks and responsibilities that promote student learning (academic, social-emotional, and physical or behavioral) as well as school functions. The TA is primarily hired to support students, with clerical and other school-related tasks being a secondary responsibility. During the school’s start-up phase, TAs will be directed by classroom teachers and evaluated by the Director through cumulative feedback from these teachers and direct observations of their performance. The TA must have the flexibility to work with students ranging from 3 years old to Grade 9, teach general music subjects to students, and provide an effective learning environment through appropriate behavior and classroom management.
Responsibilities:
· Assist teachers in planning and preparing lessons, projects, and performances.
· Assist teachers in leveraging Chinese language and culture with families and in the classroom, including, but not limited to, translation.
· Assist teachers with facilitating classroom activities, including small group instruction, station work, and cooperative learning experiences.
· Maintain routines and employ positive, collaborative methods for managing student behaviour effectively.
· As directed, assist with student interventions (academic, social-emotional, and behavioural).
· Ensure that the approach with students reflects and supports various forms of diversity and is responsive to a diverse learning community.
· Assist with student assessments and recording of assessment data.
· Collaborate with teachers while proactively engaging in the TA role.
· Maintain confidentiality and school fidelity in all communication with other employees, parents, and outside persons; refer sensitive communications to teacher or school administration.
· Act as a substitute teacher when teachers take leave (both planned and unplanned.
· Attend all assigned meetings and professional development sessions.
· Plan and teach after-school classes and holiday camps, maintaining responsibility for the students.
· Monitor and assist students on playgrounds, lunches, and other assigned duty times.
· Assist before, during, and after school functions.
· Assist overseas staff with navigating everyday life in Shantou when they are unable to proceed independently due to the language barrier.
· Maintain open and proactive communication with other school staff.
· Assist in arranging field trips and special events that enhance the curricular program.
· Support the development of strong, positive relationships with GTIIT University through collaboration with other departments and personnel as needed.
· Maintain classroom supplies, school libraries, and play equipment.
· Perform other duties as required by the Director.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field or currently pursuing such a degree.
2. Excellent communication skills, including strong English skills
3. The ability to work with people from a variety of nationalities
4. Experience working in a school setting. Training or experience in music or music instruction with school-age children is preferred
